The Not Creative Advice Story

Helping self-taught creatives turn passion into profitable ventures

Starting age 19, I was majoring in Economics in University. I had a rare opportunity to take up a school-based design position with zero experience. I picked up a 30-day Photoshop trial, designed my first asset and got the role. This kick-started my journey in design.

Over the next three years, my batch mates sought out internships in established companies while I applied for small marketing jobs that allowed me to do graphic design as part of my scope. In doing so, I built up a robust design portfolio design despite having no design education.

At age 23, I had three internships and one permanent role under my belt, yet not one was a full-scope graphic design role. Not because I couldn't but because I was scared, and I didn't know how to begin. Took five years for someone to finally persuade me to interview for my first design role.

The interview was a mess, but I got in. Armed with the self-taught creative starter pack - self-doubt, inferiority complex and imposter syndrome, I was blessed with immense growth in the following months, following closely my colleagues.

At age 26, two permanent design roles later, I was ready to pursue my small business owner dreams. Started an Instagram account and grew it from 300 to 80k followers within a year. More importantly, we hit our first 10k month and worked with 26 clients across 8 different countries. The result of this leap of faith was great flexibility of time and the ability to live life on my own accord.

Two years in, it's been a great learning process and I'm taking advantage of my platform to give back to the design community. While I haven't got everything figured out yet, but The Creative Advice will be full of personal tips, anecdotes and frameworks to help you turn your creative passion into profitable ventures.
